OUR FIRST MONTHLY WORKSHOP SERIES HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!

MARCH 2024

Aspiring writers in Botswana are in for a treat as Women in Film Botswana (WIF Botswana) announces an exciting scriptwriting workshop series in collaboration with Mebala Youth Studios. Designed to elevate writing skills to new heights, the workshop series covers everything from fundamental writing techniques to the art of crafting compelling scripts and effectively pitching ideas. Held monthly on the first Saturday of each month at 10 am, the workshops will take place at Mebala Youth Studios located in GWest at Lady Masire Youth Center.

This is a golden opportunity for budding writers to hone their craft under the guidance of industry experts and fellow enthusiasts. Every film needs a story, and a lot can be gotten away with when that story is a pretty good one. We hope to see this as the start of something new, as the plan is to slowly add more and more different types of workshops overtime. But more on that another time!

MASTERCLASS ON WORLD TRAVEL WITH WIF CHAIRS!

AUGUST 2023

WIF Botswana celebrates another first this year: our first masterclass! We collaborated with Mebala Studios to host a class on international travel in film: why it's necessary and how it can benefit the average filmmaker. It highlighted the importance of "being in the room" and the chairs, Nikita Mokgware and Serena Mmifinyana, were more than happy to speak about it!

Coming from their successful trips to the Cannes Film Festival and Durban Filmmart, they shared their experiences and advice to a very engaged crowd. Many of the questions highlighted how hungry this industry is to be informed about all these opportunities for them, and so we are more inspired than ever to continue sharing and learning with our fellow filmmakers!

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL CAMPAIGN SUCCESS!

 MAY 2023

Our ladies perservered and were finally able attend the Cannes Film Festival! This was due to countless donations, one of them being a substantial amount from Female Invest, a financial education and community platform run by women whom our Chairs met during Forbes 30 under 30 2023. The ladies did not take this donation lightly and made every second on the trip count!

Upon arrival, our Chairs made sure to make as many connections as they could, meeting with companies and partners interested in our society and wanting to collaborate on training programs and initiatives, as training is a huge mandate of ours. The trip was not made in vain, and the ladies look forward to making future announcements that will benefit our membership and push us forward as women in film! Look out Cannes 2024, because more of us are heading your way!

If you know of any travel funds or grants we as a society can apply for to take more members on trips such as these, do not hesitate to contact us!

FEMALE INVEST, INVESTS IN BOTSWANA!

APRIL 2023

Picture it: you're attending a Forbes 30 under 30 event and find yourself speaking to the woman seated next to you. You speak of your guild, your hopes and dreams for the industry, and next thing you know she's offering to fund said dreams!

This was what WIF Botswana Vice-Chair, Serena Mmifinyana, experienced when she first met the founders of Female Invest, a financial education and community platform, who provided a generous donation that was the tipping point for our Cannes Film Festival campaign. It truly was a lesson in the power of networking, and connecting with people around the world willing to help us realise our full potential as creatives and women in business.

So much in store for all of us, we cannot wait to get going!

We also received Alliance Francaise Gaborone as a guest for our meeting, which we received as a huge honour. It meant a lot that they were willing to show up and support the women in our industry, and so we look forward to our future as a guild, a society and a community!

This month, WIF Botswana collaborated with a Kgotla Films, a UK-based society enterprise, to host workshops in various local educational institutions. Kgotla Films provided the hands-on mentorship, and WIF Botswana presented on the topic of the African film industry, its potential and why Botswana, as talented as we are, still have a long way to go to catch up.

This workshop really opened the eyes of attendees in terms of what's out there, and what needs to be done to do better and be better for the sake of all our futures. Looking forward for more to come!

BOSS GENERAL MEETING 2023

10 FEB 2023

All Botswana Screen Society (BOSS) Members and those wishing to join BOSS Guilds/Associations were invited for a General Meeting at Thapong Visual Arts in Gaborone, Botswana. The purpose of this Meeting was to update the industry on the progress being made as well as sharing ideas to build the industry in this new year.

This meeting was vital to attend, as we can no longer sit by and watch others make decisions on our behalf without our knowledge. We all deserve to speak directly to the leaders in our industry and question their motives, plans and offer our support when needed. It's time for change by working together, not alone!

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL CAMPAIGN: UPDATE

10 FEB 2023

So much has happened, and it's only February. Firstly, our chairs have officially launched their GoFundMe Campaign! Many have shared it, including Women in Film, Television & Media Italia (WIFTMI) who published an article on it. It has been a slow but steady journey, and they have raised enough to apply for accreditation (which has since been accepted!) and pay for their visas, which they plan on applying for at the end of the month. Their current biggest challenge right now is sourcing enough funds for the flight bookings, as those tickets are needed when applying for visas. They don't have much time left, but they're trying all avenues for assistance!

They have been able to get in talks with GLOTTO, a local clothing brand, and Botswana Investment Trade Centre who are unable to assist with funds, but are offering help in the form of brand workshops and clothing for the trip. At the end of the day, the ladies want to promote their country as much as they can, so this help is welcomed and greatly appreciated! They still have a long way to go, but are pushing to get there slowly but surely!

If you're interested in assisting with this project, click here to donate directly to the Guild, or here to donate directly to their GoFundMe Campaign!

BANTU FILM FESTIVAL MAKES ITS VOLUNTEER REQUESTS

9  FEB 2023

We are proud to announce ourselves as one of the official partners for the Bantu Film Festival 2023! You're not seeing double; this is the second local film festival we are partnering with this year. Phew! A lot to work with, but hey, incredible women doing incredible things are our kind of people!

They are busy with a lot of prep work, one of them being a call for volunteers. We've seen volunteers become programmers and even festival directors in under five years. Once you’re a part of the system — and enjoying your time — volunteering can quickly turn into a bigger role, if not a full-time career, because at the end of the day, we all have to start somewhere, so why not here!

WIFTI OFFERS IMDbPro DISCOUNT

7 FEB 2023

It has been said that IMDb is the LinkedIn for the film and television industry, and they were not wrong. Profiles on this site are regularly requested for, and are the first ones to visit when researching a fellow colleague. As an affiliate of WIFTI, we have the benefit of receiving a 30% discount on our personal IMDbPro profiles.

This is afforded to all registered members of the guild, who may request the promo code from members of our executive committee.  It makes a difference for filmmakers that finally have enough to subscribe, and can save those extra few bucks in the process! A worthy investment, and a much-appreciated gesture.

DITORI FILM FESTIVAL MAKES ITS CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

4 FEB 2023

We are proud to announce ourselves as one of the official partners for the Ditori Festival 2023! As such a young, and small society, we shall work hard to provide all of the assistance and support we can for this necessary initiative.

Ditori Festival is coming, and they want Motswana stories to have a platform that's loud and proud! They are looking for short films told by locals/citizens to celebrate their work with one another.  The films can range from a minute to an hour. One must be a Motswana or a citizen of Botswana to participate, so we look forward to seeing local, cultural films that speak to our ways and our people!

WIF Botswana ended the year with a bang! Or should we say, a pitch? WIF Member Lame Moilwa represented us on an international platform during the WIFTI Worldwide Pitch event. Her story was well received, however wasn't able to snag the top prizes offered. Nevertheless, invaluable lessons were learnt and the experience was well worth it.

Additionally, another WIF Member was part of the session: Lebogang Mpofu (Top Power Pictures) sat on the judging panel.  She was a natural, and appreciated the stories and ideas other women around the world had.

FIRST (AND LAST) GENERAL MEETING FOR 2022

12 NOV 2022

A quick general meeting to round off the year, and prepare for the next. WIF Botswana had our first general meeting this year and it was nice to finally put faces to the names in our Whatsapp group! Since we're a new society, our first year (2022) is sort of a free pass, allowing us to get things in order without worrying too much about reporting back to Registrar of Societies.

Therefore, since 2023 will be the year to get serious, we all sat down and discussed logistics to prepare. Here's to a fruitful 2023 for us all!

FORMAL INVITATION TO SPEAK AT PAVILLON AFRIQUES

22 SEPT 2022

Our Vice-Chair has been gifted another win! Vice-Chair Serena Mmifinyana has been formally invited to be part of the round tables at Pavillon Afrique's 4th Edition happening at no other than Cannes Film Festival 2023! It's an incredible opportunity and one that we do not plan on letting slip by.

Her along with Chairperson Nikita Mokgware will be representatives for WIF at this prestigious event, and will work together to make the most of the trip. They plan on not only network and connect with others, but to also speak of individual WIF members and their companies in order to show the variety of talent and services our country has. The aim is to make sure everyone they meet will remember WIF Botswana, and will have any contacts they need should they wish to enquire of it further. Although only two are departing, they will be taking as much of their country with them as possible.

Ms. Mmifinyana and Mokgware have already begun searching for sponsors and donors for the trip. One of their planned campaigns will be opening a GofundMe in January 2023. It won't be easy, but both are determined to make this work one way or another. Chances like these don't come often!
